Frequently Asked Questions

Which ND filter should I buy?

The best ND filter for your photography will depend on the effects you want to achieve.

The first choice you need to make it whether to go for a Fixed ND Filter or a Variable ND Filter. A variable ND filter offers more options, which is great if you’re shooting in changing light conditions, or just starting out with ND filters. A fixed ND provides a specific light reduction and works better with telephoto and wide-angle lenses. The next choice you need to make is the level of light reduction you want. The higher the ND number, the more light it blocks from reaching your camera sensor.

Should I buy a fixed or variable ND filter?

It depends on how, where and what you’ll be shooting.

Fixed ND filters block a fixed f-stop of light from entering your camera. Variable ND filters provide more flexibility and have a range of f-stops you can block by rotating the outer element. If you’re starting out with ND filters, we recommend a Variable ND so you have more flexibility while you’re learning how to shoot with an ND. If the light is likely to change often, a Variable ND saves you changing between fixed NDs each time.

Do I need to get an ND if I already have a CPL?

Yes, if you want more than a 2 f-stop reduction of light.

While CPL filters polarize light to remove reflections and increase colour saturation, ND filters reduce the amount of light that makes it through to your camera’s sensor, which opens up opportunities to experiment with depth of field and motion blur effects even in bright light.

What are the best ND filters for wide-angle and telephoto lenses?

Our whole range of Fixed ND Filters work with wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

Our ND filters have ultra-slim rims to avoid any vignetting issues. Our Fixed ND Filters are all in our professional Plus+ range and use the world’s best glass, making them perfect for wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

What do the ND Filter numbers mean?

The higher the number, the more light it blocks from entering your camera.

The 4 of our ND4 Filter Plus+ refers to the amount of light blocked. An ND2 reduces light transmittance to a quarter. An ND8 reduces it to an eighth, an ND1000 reduces it to 1/1000th.

Why buy a square filter system?

You can use one filter system across all your lenses.

Square filter systems are made up of a square filter, a filter holder and a filter adapter to attach it to your lenses. You can buy adapters rings that let you attached the square filter holder with different sizes of lenses. This means you can invest in a better quality neutral density or polarizing filter because you can use it across all lenses instead of buying multiple filters for each lens.

Who should buy a square filter system?

Anyone with a broad collection of lenses, landscape photographers and those who value quality over a minimalist camera bag.

Square filters can be much cheaper than circular filters if you use a broad range of lenses because you can use the one set of filters across all of provided you have the right filter adapters to connect your filter holder to the different sized lenses. Square filters are popular with landscape photographers too because you can, for example, adjust the height of a graduated ND filter in the filter holder to better suit the lighting conditions. Square filters are bulkier and slower to set up so aren’t to those who prefer a light kit and moving quickly.

How does a square filter system work?

There are three elements to a square filter system: the filter itself, the filter holder, and the filter adapter that connects to your lens.

You can use your square filter with different size lenses if you buy different sized filter adapters. These allow you to connect your filter holder to your lens. You then insert filters into the holder and you’re ready to shoot. Filter holders let you stack multiple filters so you can combine neutral density filters and polarizing filters.

Do Urth Square Filters have a colour cast?

No, Urth Square Filters have great colour neutrality.

There are a couple of reasons your images may show a slight colour cast when using an ND filter. Check your white balance settings. By restricting the light entering your camera, it may throw out your white balance settings. Manually adjust your white balance settings to reduce any colour cast.

Do Urth square filters work with third-party filter holders?

Yes, Urth 100mm square filters are 2mm thick and are designed to work with third-party holders.

We recommend you use our square filters with a Urth square filter holder because they were meticulously designed to work with one another.
